Cherokee County completed the 2016 season with a 10-3 record. Last year Cherokee County captured the region five title and a number one seed in the Class 4A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. It was the first region championship for the Warriors since the 2009 season. Cherokee County lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Hokes Bluff team by a score of 28-21. The Warriors won as many games as in any season since 2009. Since 2010, Cherokee County has gone a combined 35-41. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 39th in Class 4A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Cherokee County has managed to compile a record of 149-130. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 24th in Class 4A and 157th in the AHSAA. The Warriors are led by head coach Thomas Curry who is entering his seventeenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 112-74 over the past sixteen seasons at Cherokee County. Under his direction the Warriors have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times. They have won five region crowns with Coach Curry. Coach Curry led Cherokee County to a state championship in 2009. Coach Curry's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-one season stands at 161-88 (64.7%). His 161 wins rank th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Curry's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of fifteen times and won eight region championships. The Cherokee County Warriors will play in Class 4A region five during the 2017 season. The Warriors enter the 2017 season riding a 8 game regular season winning streak. The Warriors should be considered one of the favorites for the region five championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Tyren Dupree returns for his Senior season after completing 101 of 162 passes for 1,347 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,204 yards and another 15 scores. Senior Sid Perry returns after rushing for 421 yards on 47 carries and scoring 5 touchdowns. The Warriors open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Cedartown GA on Friday, August 25. Cherokee County and Cedartown GA have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Warriors have a 0-3-0 record against Cedartown GA. They last met in 1983 with Cedartown GA winning by a score of 26-14. Cherokee County returns 4A All-State Senior linebacker Riley Russell.
